Falstad Memorial - IC MEMO Conference 2006

Occupation and Remembrance in Northern and Central Europe

PLACE
Falstad Memorial and Human Rights Centre in Levanger, Norway. The Centre was established in 2000 by Norwegian authorities. The main activities of the centre are education, research and remembrance on the history of the Nazi Camps in Norway during the Second World War and education on Modern Human Rights issues. The Centre is located on the grounds of the former SS-Lager Falstad, the second largest Prison Camp established in Occupied Norway between 1940 and 1945. In 2006, the memorial will open its new permanent exhibition.

SUMMARY
This opening conference at the new Falstad Memorial and Human Rights Centre will deal with a comparative approach on structures and motives of occupation during the Second World War, supplemented with comparisons of the cultures of memory in different countries and regions of Northern and Central Europe. In the case of Germany, the main focus will be on coming to terms with the Nazi Past. Memorial museums in the various countries will be given special attention.
