Im Frühjahr 2015 jährt sich zum hundertsten Mal die Geheimkonferenz von London, während der im April 1915 mit der Zuteilung zu Italien das Schicksal Südtirols für das 20. Jahrhundert besiegelt wurde. Südtirols Selbstverständnis veränderte sich in den letzten 100 Jahren zwangsläufig, nachdem die politische Zugehörigkeit des Landes eine nachhaltige Veränderung erfahren hatte. Während die SüdtirolerInnen häufig ihre historisch-kulturelle Verbundenheit mit dem deutschen Sprachraum betonten, bestimmten das Land gleichzeitig starke Einflüsse von Süden.
Die Geburt des Landes aus dem “Geist des Ersten Weltkriegs” ließ in Südtirol neue Zuschreibungen und neue Orientierungen entstehen, die zu einem mühsamen und nicht widerspruchsfreien Prozess neuer Gleichgewichtsbildungen und zu einem tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen Wandel besonderer Art geführt haben. Krieg und Gewalt, die doppelte Diktaturerfahrung von italienischem Faschismus und deutschem Nationalsozialismus, aber auch Demokratie, Republikanismus, Friedensinitiativen, politischer Weitblick und wachsender ökonomischer Wohlstand haben diese langdauernden Vorgänge begleitet und gestaltet.
Im Ergebnis ist Südtirol nach 100 Jahren völkerrechtlicher Zugehörigkeit zu Italien ein Land auf der Schwelle zwischen Nord und Süd, gleichzeitig jedoch weist es spezifisch südtirolisch-regionale Charakteristika auf. Diese sonderwegs- artige Rolle zwischen ethnozentrischer Engstirnigkeit und europäisch- kosmopolitischem Horizont verdient eine erneute Analyse.
Die mehrsprachig angelegte Konferenz setzt sich zum Ziel, den Schwellen-, aber auch den Verbindungscharakter Südtirols zwischen Nord- und Südeuropa auszuloten, um durch interdisziplinäre und vergleichende Herangehensweisen den speziellen Status Südtirols zu quantifizieren und qualifizieren. Des Weiteren sollen diejenigen kulturellen Aspekte, die sich nicht durch die Bipolarität Nord- Süd erklären lassen, einer näheren Analyse unterzogen werden.
Der Fokus der Beiträge liegt auf historischen, ebenso aber auch auf diplomatie-, politik-, wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Willkommen sind auch komparatistische Ansätze, um regionalistische Engführungen durch den Blick auf überregionale Situationen und Vergleiche zu vermeiden.
Die Konferenz findet in Schloss Prösels (bei Völs am Schlern) im unteren Eisacktal statt, ein Ort, der sich durch Zentralität und Abgeschiedenheit gleichermaßen auszeichnet, der jahrhundertealte Mauern mit moderner Kommunikation verbindet und so einen idealen Rahmen für engagierte interdisziplinäre und interkulturelle Konversation bietet.

Ein Land auf der Schwelle – Un territorio sulla soglia – A land on the threshold
Nella primavera del 2015 saranno 100 anni che la Conferenza segreta di Londra, svoltasi nell'aprile del 1915, abbia determinato con la cessione all'Italia, le sorti del Sudtirolo-Alto Adige novecentesco. Anche l'autopercezione e l'identità della provincia di Bolzano si modificarono notevolmente durante l'ultimo secolo a seguito del radicale cambio di appartenza politica del territorio. Se la popolazione sudtirolese sottolineò spesso i legami storico-politici con l'area di lingua tedesca, al contempo gli influssi meridionali hano condizionato la regione in forte misura. La nascita della provincia dallo “spirito della Grande Guerra” fece emergere nuovi elementi di appartenenza e nuovi orientamenti i quali condizionarono un processo di riassestamento e di profondo cambio sociale, non privi di ambiguità e contraddizioni. Guerra e violenza, l'esperienza duplice del fascismo italiano e del nazionalsocialismo tedesco, ma anche democrazia, repubblicanesimo, iniziative di pacificazione, lungimiranza politica e crescente benessere economico hanno accompagnato e plasmato queste evoluzioni di lunga durata.
Dopo cent'anni di appartenza allo stato italiano il Sudtirolo-Alto Adige è un territorio sulla soglia fra Nord e Sud che al contempo ha mantenuto alcune specificità tipicamente regionali. Questo particolare percorso, a metà strada fra piccolo etnocentrismo e larghi orizzonti europei e cosmopoliti, merita una sua riconsiderazione discorsiva.
La conferenza plurilingue ambisce ad analizzare la provincia di Bolzano quale zona di confine, soglia e d'incontro tra le grandi aree dell'Europa settentrionale e meridionale. Tramite un approccio comparatistico e multidisciplinare si tenterà di indagare il particolare status sudtirolese su base quantitativa e qualitativa. Inoltre saranno anche trattati quegli aspetti culturali che non si spiegano con la bipolarità nord-sud.
I contributi verteranno soprattutto su quesiti storici, diplomatici, economici e sociali. Si invita anche di presentare analisi comparatistiche volte ad evitare sguardi troppo regionalistici e atti a inquadrare i contesti sovraregionali e internazionali.
La sede della Conferenza sarà Castel Presule (presso Fiè allo Sciliar) in bassa Val Isarco. Si tratta di un luogo centrale e appartato al contempo, che coniugando di architettura medievale e tecnica moderna offre un contesto ideale per il dialogo interdisciplinare e interculturale.

A land on the threshold - Ein Land auf der Schwelle – Un territorio sulla soglia
Spring 2015 sees the 100th anniversary of the secret treaty of London. In April 1915 the fate of South Tyrol was sealed for the duration of the 20th century when this part of Habsburg’s crown colony was handed to Italy. South Tyrol’s self-definition had to change since, now that the political connection had altered drastically. While the German-speaking South Tyroleans have often stressed their histo-cultural allegiance with the Germanic world, their land was also exposed to a strong and persistent influence from the South. The birth of the land South Tyrol through the “spirit of World War I” created new loyalties and new societal developments, which led to a tiresome and sometimes controversial process of checks and balances and to a profound change in society. War and violence, two dictatorships (Italian Fascism and German National Socialism), democracy, Republicanism, peace initiatives, political wisdom and economic affluence have accompanied and influenced these drawn-out societal changes.
As a result and after 100 years of belonging to Italy, South Tyrol has become a land on the threshold between South and North, but, at the same time, it displays highly specific South Tyrolean characteristics. This extraordinary position between ethnocentric regionalism and European/cosmopolitan horizon deserves renewed analysis.
This multilingual conference attempts to quantify and qualify South Tyrol’s character as both a threshold and a connection between Northern and Southern Europe by employing interdisciplinary and comparative analyses. The country is equally characterized by phenomena which do not fit the North-South bipolar approach. These deserve their own approach and analysis at our conference.
The focus of possible contributions is on historical, diplomatic, political, economic, social and literary approaches. We also welcome comparative contributions to allow for superregional views and contextualisations.
This conference will take place in Prösels Castle, near the village of Völs am Schlern in the lower Eisack valley, 20 mins from Bozen. Prösels provides both centrality and remoteness as it juxtaposes medieval architecture with modern communication – an ideal framework for stimulating interdisciplinary and intercultural conversations.
