The German Historical Institute invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in memory of the late Jürgen Heideking. The fellowship, supported by the Fritz-Thyssen-Foundation, is intended for American scholars working in one of the three wider areas to which Professor Heideking made important contributions: American history and German-American relations from the early modern period to the present; international history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and twentieth-century German and European history.

The Thyssen-Heideking Fellow will receive a stipend of € 25,000 (plus a family allowance if applicable) for a fellowship period of six to twelve months in residence at the University of Cologne to begin in 2009. The fellow will be expected to give one public lecture on his/her research. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of academic diplomas, project description (8-10 pages), research schedule for fellowship period, and two confidential letters of reference. The deadline for applications is October 15, 2008.
