The Department is now inviting applications for a number of PhD scholarships in four competitions (University Prize, Faculty Scholarships, Harry Worthington Scholarships and Wolfson Scholarships). The call is open for students who want to pursue doctoral research on topics in British and European history from late antiquity to the late twentieth century, imperial and international history, and the history of colonial, nineteenth- and twentieth-century America.

The Department of History is one of the largest, most active and successful centres for historical research in the UK. It was ranked among the top-ten history departments in the UK for its world-leading research in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008. Our more than 30 academic staff members are engaged in cutting-edge research in a huge variety of fields which range from the first century to the late twentieth century, and with particular strengths in British, European, Imperial and American history. Doctoral students will join a vibrant postgraduate research culture that comprises a number of discussion groups, student-led events and participation in the broader research culture of the department (seminar series, workshops and conferences).

Potential applicants are advised to contact a potential supervisor in their chosen area of research at an early stage for an informal conversation. For a full list of staff members see http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/history/staff/academics

Scholarship: The scholarships mentioned above for full-time doctoral research are 3 years in duration. Awards must be taken up on 1st October 2015. Awards will comprise fees for UK/EU students at Research Council rates and a maintenance grant (£13,863 per year for the Harry Worthington and the Faculty Scholarships, £15,000 per year as well as a Research Training Support Grant of currently £5,000 per year for the Wolfson Scholarships, and £ 20,000 per year as well as an annual Research Training Support Grant of £2,500 for the University Prize Scholarships).

Eligibility: The studentships named above (including both the fees award and the maintenance grant) are available to applicants from all European Union member states, including those who are not currently residents in the UK. Applicants can apply in each of the four competitions simultaneously.

Requirements: The Department welcomes applications from highly-qualified candidates. Applicants should have completed a suitable MA in history, or a related discipline, with a research-training element before joining our research programme. Applicants are also expected to have at least achieved a 2.1 or equivalent in a Bachelors degree in history, or a related discipline, from a UK or overseas university. English Language Requirements for applicants whose first language is not English are IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in each component, or an equivalent English language qualification.
