The School of Modern Languages would like to appoint a Graduate Teaching Assistant in German. The post would commence 1 September 2012 and would be tenable for three years with an option to extend for a further year. The successful candidate must be a native speaker of German and will assist with module teaching (maximum 16 hours per week, 10 of which will be in the classroom). He/she will have the option of participating in the PGCertHE (Postgraduate Certificate In Higher Education), and will register for a PhD within the School; fees waived throughout. Salary: circa £13K per annum.

The successful candidate will undertake a PhD in modern German or Austrian culture and society since 1800. Research specialisms in the German section cover the literature, film and history of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Possible research topics include post-war Austrian politics and culture, East German history and culture, sickness and ageing in literature, memory and identity in contemporary Germany, and ideology and translation. As well as providing supervision in German, the School offers expertise in a variety of areas and would also welcome applications from candidates who wish to pursue interdisciplinary or comparative research.
