Traditions in Czech Research into the Tsarist Russian Past This study describes the roots and traditions of Czech historical Russian studies research that focused on the history of tsarist Russia, which means up to 1917. Through analysis of personalities and their work, it draws attention to subjects that were studied and to the methodologies they used. Its goal is to highlight the positive traditions which contemporary research into the tsarist Russian past ought to or at least could follow up upon. At the same time, it takes notice of the necessity of pursuing new, hitherto little studied subjects, or those that have not been studied at all, which are of course indispensable for a complex, modern knowledge of the history of this region. The study is conceived as an overview with sections that provide insight into the works of representatives of individual stages of Czech historical-Russian studies research. It achieves its aims through the method of historical analyses and an accompanying comparative synthesis with elements of painstaking case studies.

The Image of Russia and Eastern Europe in Slovak Historiography 1990–2015 The changes in the choice of topics in research into Slovak and world history manifest most strikingly in the study of the history of Russia and Eastern Europe and Slovak-Russian/Soviet relations in the twentieth century. There was a retreat from traditional subjects and the spectrum of topics treated in Russian/Soviet history, and expansion into areas that, until that time, had been neglected for various objective reasons or were tabooed for political reasons.

Evaluation and Reevaluation of Russian-Slovak Relations in the 19th Century in Contemporary Historiography in the Slovak Republic The goal of this study is show the historiographic image of Russian-Slovak relations in the 19th century in works by Slovak authors. These are works that were created during the last quarter century. The milestone here is the origin of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993 and the ensuing political changes, which brought the attempt to reevaluate all of the crucial historical matters in the history of the Slovak nation, including Russian-Slovak relations, into Slovak historiography. Works by modern Slovak authors, in which the role of the Russian factor in the history of the Slovak National Revival of the 19th century is analyzed are evaluated in this essay through the methods of historism and comparative analysis. Particular attention is dedicated to those Slovak authors who have evaluated Ľudovít Štúr’s tract “Slavism and the World of the Future” from a contemporary point of view. The evaluation and reevaluation of the historiographical image of Russian-Slovak relations in the 19th century is performed with a view to the new political conditions, in which were mirrored the modern methodological approaches of Slovak historians. New social-political conditions are also taken into account, because they have brought new dimensions into the issues of “Slovak geopolitics”. This work respects the reality that the Slovak historical memory and its transformations are part of the process of forming a collective identity that is forged within the framework of the European Union.

Research in Russian Philosophy in the Czech Environment After 1990 This article discusses the historiography of Russian philosophy in the Czech environment after. After a brief characterization of its beginnings, associated with the name of T. G. Masaryk, and the developments during the interwar and postwar eras in Czechoslovakia, the analysis then moves into the situation after 1990. It distinguishes two phases: the 1990s, which are primarily associated with the introduction of new authors, and the phase that began after 2000, when studies and monographs begin to appear to a greater extent in the historiography. What has been distinctive in Czech research is the preponderance of non-philosophers among the researchers. The most significant trends in the research are considered to be the literary-historical, historical, and theological. The article acquaints readers with the main personalities who engage with Russian philosophy in the Czech Republic and briefly introduces their areas of research and main works. It also touches upon the institutions and publishing houses that focus on Russian thought. At the conclusion it pauses to contemplate the outlook for the future of this field through probes into the student theses defended at Charles University.

Overview of Czech Research into the History of Russian Literature After 1945 (Syntheses and Lexicons) The article offers an annotated historiographical overview of literary-historical syntheses and lexicons dedicated to Russian literature that Czech scholars in the field of Russian studies after 1945. Russian literature often served as a space in which to discuss social and political problems, which is also illustrated by Masaryk’s voluminous synthesis Russia and Europe. Literary-historical syntheses and lexicons thus also serve those who are interested in Russian history and cultural history. Whereas historical Russian studies has various historiographical perspectives at its disposal, for literary-historical Russian studies the gap has now been filled by this article. Among the paramount works created in this field belong the histories of Russian literature of the 19th century (Parolek – Honzík, 1977) and 20th century (Hrala, 2007), On the other hand, Czech scholarly libraries are missing an erudite academic history of Russian literature from the oldest period to the present.

Czech Research on Compatriots in Russia and Ukraine Before 1989 Czech authors’ attention has been focused both on the mass social-economic emigration to Czarist Russia from Bohemia and Moravia which began in the eighteen sixties and the migration of Protestant exiles from Zelów in Poland after it became part of Russian or Congress Poland. The greatest interest can be observed in the topic of Czech compatriots in the Volhynia Governorate who, according to the first Russian census of 1897, accounted for 55 % of all Czechs with Russian citizenship.
