CfP: Communicating family memory: remembering in a changing media environment

Special issue of "Communications: The European Journal of Communication Research"; guest-edited by Christine Lohmeier, University of Bremen

Memory and media are closely interlinked areas of research: In fact, memory has always materialized through cultural artefacts, various objects and the mediation of images, words and signs. Furthermore, memory as a social construct has a strong collective dimension. Even individuals' memories can be viewed and made sense of within the context of different collectivities and social formations such as the family, an ethnic community or a nation. Media are essential for these groups to communicate with each other and thereby constitute and negotiate identities, or make sense of the world - past, present and future included.

The proposed special issue of "Communications" aims to solicit articles which consider remembering and forgetting within the contexts of families. Next to the nation and ethnic communities, families are classic memory communities. Families shape the individuals' understanding ofpersonal and collective identities and belonging, as well as notions of exclusion. Moreover, families can provide an immediate personal access to the past (through older family members and previous generations) as well as the future (children and imagined future generations).

In times of 'deep mediatization', communication within families has undergone some tremendous changes: a higher number of communication devices are in use with an increasing number of functions and media and communication devices present in most areas of everyday life. At the same time the pace of innovation is increasing - both in terms of devices and gadgets available and in terms of services and platforms on offer. Through everyday practices like texting and emailing, more and more digital traces are produced creating a sense that these activities are stored somewhere and therefore not forgotten. Meanwhile, it is also apparent that the data produced through these activities are not in one's own hands and the people who generate them do not have complete control over them.

Simultaneously, heightened mobility (be it for work or leisure purposes), migratory experiences and flight, as well as divorces and ruptures within families provide challenges as well as perhaps new opportunities for creating family memory.

Submissions can address but are not limited to the following topics:

- media and memory practices in families

- negotiating memory through communication practices and media use

- the family as a memory community in the context of or in relation to other memory communities

- communicative practices and remembering in different types of families (single-parent, LGBT parents, mixed-race families, multi-generational families, foster families)

- representation of family memory in media texts, exhibitions, museums

- families as (dys-)functional memory communities

- critical approaches that question/furtherdevelop the concept of family and family memory

- theorizing mediated family memory

- communication and family memory in times of crises, migration and flight

- media, memory, mnemonic practices of transnational families

- the significance of objects and mediated memories for families

- forgetting in families in times of deep mediatization

- power relations/struggles concerning memory and communication matters within families

- methodological questions and reflections concerningresearching family communication and family memory

- situating communicative practices and family memory in the context of mass communication

The open access e-journal 'Fascism' will be publishing a theme issue in April 2017 about the subject of 'War Veterans and Fascism'. The theme issue aims to focus on the role of veterans' associations in European countries in the interwar period, focussing on the role of this type of civil society organisation with regards to contemporary political culture, international initiatives to peace and reconciliation, and the rise of Fascism in each country. The comparative and transnational approach, based on the recent historiography on veterans' movements, would provide a correction of the image of 'brutalisation of political culture' and shed new light on the connections between veterans and the rise of Fascism.
Guest editors of the theme issue are Kristian Mennen (Berlin) and Wim van Meurs (Nijmegen). The special includes contributions by the international experts John Paul Newman (Yugoslavia), Constantin Iordachi (Hungary and Romania), and Martina Salvante (Italy).
We are looking for two additional contributions on Western European case studies. Experts for this particulare subject are invited to submit a case study for this topic in a Western European country. The deadline for the article submission is 1 November.
Please send a short CV and a 250-word abstract to k.m.mennen[at]gmail.com or w.v.meurs[at]let.ru.nl until 15 August.
For enquiries and questions about further details, please feel free to contact us on one of the e-mail addresses mentioned.

For the focus topic on “Transnational Social Work – A Border-Crossing Agenda for Practice and Research” of the journal “Transnational Social Review – A Social Work Journal” (TSR), the guest editors Claudia Olivier-Mensah, Wolfgang Schröer and Cornelia Schweppe invite your submissions of proposal abstracts.
The issue focusses on transnational entanglements of social work and reflects on how social work and other social support systems are engaged in and shaped by cross border processes and transformations, which pose essential challenges for social work as they question fundamental concepts and assumptions. The focus topic on “Transnational Social Work” aims to take up those challenges by reflecting on and recognising the ways in which the nation state is embedded in social work theory, practice and research concepts and to overcome the frequent equating of the "national" with the "societal".
Abstracts (max. 500 words) should be sent to olivier@uni-mainz.de, schroeer@uni-hildesheim.de and c.schweppe@uni-mainz.de by 20/08/2016.
You are welcome to submit and circulate!

Call for journal articles (Hungarian Historical Review - issue 2017/3)

Migration and Refugees in the Balkans and East Central Europe between the Fifteenth and Twentieth Centuries

The Hungarian Historical Review invites submissions for its third issue in 2017, the theme of which will be “Migration and Refugees in the Balkans and East Central Europe”

The deadline for the submission of abstracts: September 30, 2016.

Special Editors: Ulf Brunnbauer & Gábor Demeter

Migration and refugee flight have always been key phenomena in the Balkans and East Central Europe, shaping both the ethnic-religious character of the region and its social and economic structures. Some of the consequences of population movement are obvious, such as ethnic diversity or ethnic homogeneity, and movements of peoples have often been a cause or at least a pretext for tensions and political divisions in the region. Other consequences are less immediately apparent, including the contributions of migration to the economic development of the region. One of the key aims of this thematic issue is to draw attention to these less frequently emphasized effects of migration and population movement from a longue durée perspective (increased economic potential, contributions to social and cultural innovation, facilitation of the division of labor, as well as the complexities of the processes of integration/exclusion/re-integration).

Economic considerations are relevant, but other phenomena related to migration, such as the motives for mass migrations from micro and macro perspective, the religious and social composition of migrant groups, and the perceptions of migrants and refugees among the majority populations also merit examination. The goals of migrant groups, the problems that arise because of population movement, and the ideas of decision-makers concerning the ways in which to address these problems should also be taken into consideration in order to reveal interactions among different groups of agents.

Another key topic is the processes of integration into the socio-economic system. The questions one might consider include:

- what cultural-economic-political niches did migrants and refugees fill;

- how was the preservation of migrant culture promoted, or how did government policies focus instead on diminishing differences and promoting assimilation;

- to what extent did population movement (migration/refugees) contribute to changes in the ruling elites or in economic systems;

- how were different groups of newcomers dealt with by governments.

We welcome articles on both spontaneous and forced, internal (within a country) and interregional (within for instance the Balkans or Central Europe), and international migration (also from a micro perspective), as well as shifts that were sudden or slow.

We welcome case studies, studies based on also on comparative approaches, and studies that offer overviews of a topic or perspective of inquiry, such as studies in microhistory, longue durée, temporal or spatial comparisons (for instance perceptions of refugees and migrants, shifts in the policies of a given state or nation concerning migrants over the course of centuries, differences in the attitudes of several countries regarding the same migrant group), etc. Differences in behavior and the immigration culture of homogeneous and heterogeneous host nations could also be considered.

We invite the submission of abstracts on the questions and topics raised above.

Please send an abstract of no more than 500 words and a short biographical sketch with a selected list of the author’s five most important publications (we do not accept full CVs).

The editors will ask the authors of selected papers (max. 10,000 words) to submit their final articles no later than January 31, 2017. The articles will be published after a peer-review process.

We provide proofreading for contributors who are not native speakers of English.

All articles must conform to our submission guidelines: http://hunghist.org/index.php/for-authors .

The deadline for the submission of abstracts: September 30, 2016.

Proposals should be submitted by email: hunghist@btk.mta.hu
