In recent decades, work has undergone numerous mutations. New questions arise about the perception and value of work, the impact of digitalization, the virtues of the welfare state, and the social and ecological responsibility of employers, employees and companies. All these changes within the sphere of work raise the issue of the sustainability of work in various ways. The Summer Academy aims to explore the relationship between work and sustainability along four thematic axes: Sustainable Work and Ecology, Sustainable Work and Democracy, Sustainable Work and Social Welfare as well as Sustainable Work and Economic Development.

Promoting an interdisciplinary approach, the Summer Academy welcomes contributions of advanced doctoral researchers and early post-docs (max. 2 years after PhD) from various disciplines engaged in research relating to the field of work and sustainability. The Academy will provide a space to discuss individual research projects with peer researchers and leading academics from different disciplinary backgrounds.

The deadline for applications is November 30, 2020.

For detailed information about the scope of the four thematic axes as well as the application process please follow the link below or contact katrin.sold@wiko-berlin.de.

The online course’s interdisciplinary approach combines teaching methods such as: live online lectures, group discussions and projects, individual assignments or independent research. The Online Winter School benefits from the extensive experience that the Institute of International Studies has gained from organizing its English programmes and its Spring and Summer Universities every year since 2009.

Leo Baeck Summer University (LBSU) 2021 – Berlin

Sephardic History and Culture
July 05–16, 2021

Organized by Selma Stern Zentrum für Jüdische Studien Berlin-Brandenburg (https://www.selma-stern-zentrum.de/) and the University of Potsdam.

Deadline for applications: January 15, 2021

The Leo Baeck Summer University aims to lay the foundation for an international network of doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers in the interdisciplinary field of Jewish Studies. This year’s focus will be on Sephardic history and culture.

For a variety of reasons, Sephardic Studies are still underrepresented at European universities. The LBSU of 2021 is therefore designed to connect European and Israeli PhD candidates in the field and aims to create new networks of scholarly exchange and cooperation. PhD students with projects from all epochs and all geographic areas between Iberia and the so-called Western and Eastern Sephardic Diasporas are encouraged to apply. Especially welcome are projects with historical approaches, be they from the fields of social, cultural or religious history, literary studies or the history of knowledge and ideas. We will invite ten participants to present their projects and discuss new approaches to the field with renowned scholars from Europe, Israel, and the United States.

Our two-week program includes guest lectures, seminar-style discussions, as well as an excursion to Hamburg. Participants are required to present and discuss their own research projects.

In case of travel restrictions, the program will be conducted online.

Team:
Academic directors are Prof. Sina Rauschenbach and Prof. Carsten Schapkow from the Institute for Jewish Studies and Religious Studies, University of Potsdam. They will be supported by an international team of experts in Sephardic history, philosophy, literature, and religion.
Executive Manager: Adina Stern

University of Sussex (Brighton, UK). Depending on the situation of Covid 19, the event might be moved partly or fully online. For the time being, we are planning to host the Summer School on campus. However, please do not book travel or accommodation until we confirm this.
Deadline: 15 January 2021

The Summer School brings together young researchers who are currently working on topics in Jewish history and culture (e.g. on Jewish religion and inner life, literature, culture, ideological movements, inter-religious and inter-cultural relations and everyday life, and antisemitism) giving them the opportunity to present and discuss their projects in an informal and friendly atmosphere with leading scholars in the field. In doing so, the Summer School continues the efforts of previous events creating an interdisciplinary network of younger scholars engaged in areas of European-Jewish studies, thought and culture from the early modern periods to the present day. Applicants must be PhD students at the time the summer school starts.

Candidates are invited to send, via email, a 500-word proposal outlining their PhD project (not including references and short bibliography), a short CV and one reference from their supervisor or relevant scholar in the field to (all material must be in English):
