Naiden, Fred S., The War Councils of Alexander the Great in their Military and Cultural Context, pp. 260–301
The war council, a neglected aspect of the army of Alexander III of Macedon, was a frequently convened, often influential body to be compared with – but in some respects contrasted with – the better known Macedonian army assembly. The account of war councils in Xenophon’s Anabasis provided a precedent for both Arrian and the other Alexander historians to follow or depart from, but Roman legal and political concerns also made themselves felt, especially in Curtius.

Hallmannsecker, Martin, Die Monatsnamen von Aphrodisias, pp. 302–312
That the Carian city of Aphrodisias used three different types of designations for its months (numerals, honorific months, Macedonian-Seleucid months) has led some scholars to postulate the existence of three separate complete name-systems. Based on the epigraphic evidence, I argue that the polis used only one set of month names throughout antiquity, in which some of the traditional designations were replaced by months in honour of Roman emperors. The case of Aphrodisias proves to be a telling testimony for the continuing vitality of the Greek poleis under Roman rule, which maintained many of their traditions but also actively reshaped them.

Mouritsen, Henrik, Populism, Ancient and Modern, pp. 313–342
The paper explores the link between populism and political instability in the late Roman republic using key insights gained from studies of contemporary politics to enhance our understanding of its political culture. The aim is to refine our approach by adding a new theoretically informed dimension, inspired by the works of modern political scientists, above all those of Jan-Werner Müller, who has emphasised anti-pluralism as a key characteristic of populism. Applying this approach, republican Rome emerges as a profoundly populist and antagonistic political culture, with a public discourse dominated by populist tropes and exclusionary claims to represent the ‘people’. The populist mode of engagement was closely linked to the absence of parties and the personalisation of the political field which that entailed. In practice, the ‘universal populism’ of republican Rome expressed itself in an all-pervasive concern with popularity, claims to which provided a vital means of asserting political legitimacy.

Rodríguez Garrido, Jacobo, The Curious Case of Aurelius Papia. Slavery, Legislation and Causae Liberales in the Times of Severus Alexander, pp. 343–369
This article is an approach to the imperial legislation on slavery in the time of Severus Alexander and, within this, to the development of the causae liberales through the study of a specific case reported in C. 4, 55, 4, where a man claims he was sold by his own slaves. As well as providing a better understanding of the Roman law on slavery, this case study seeks to better comprehend the model of ruler embodied by the last of the Severi, in the aftermath of the Constitutio Antoniniana and prior to the period of instability that followed his death.

Burgess, Richard W., The Date of Nepotian’s Usurpation, pp. 370–384
This paper demonstrates that three recent attempts to redate the month-long usurpation of Nepotian from 350 to 351 on the basis of the narrative of Aurelius Victor are erroneous and that there is nearly unanimous agreement in the surviving evidence, when properly understood, for the accepted date of 3 June 350. In addition, it presents the evidence for dating Magnentius’ appointment of Decentius as caesar to the same month and year.
