It is not uncommon to hear criticisms of historical research concerning antiquity, and in particular of its usefulness. And if it comes to investigations that relate to the religions of Greek and Roman antiquity, for example, scepticism is even more accentuated. To these doubts, we can oppose on the one hand the methodological interest of this kind of research, on the other its immediate social utility. From an academic point of view, the Greco-Roman religions, which have the advantage of being «dead», can be subjected by researchers to all kind of possible questions, because they have lost all social stakes fifteen centuries ago, and the arguments that
they put forward no longer scandalize anyone. On the other hand, insofar as most research denies the Greek and Roman piety the character of religion, they raise awareness of religious intolerance still very much present in our society.

The question whether Vianden ‘belonged’ to Luxembourg is not an easy question to answer for all periods of history. The relationship between the county of Vianden and the county, then duchy of Luxembourg was permanently changing during the 700 years of their common existence. Initially perceived as a regional rival of Vianden in the High Middle Ages, Luxembourg obtained the feudal lordship over parts of Vianden’s territories in 1269. But Vianden perserved a certain independence that made it possible to act against Luxembourg’s interests. From the 16th to the 18th
century the relationship was determined by the collaboration or the confrontation between the Habsburg rulers of Luxembourg and the Orange-Nassau counts of Vianden. The national historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries often saw Vianden as resisting the Habsburgs as well as the kings of France, whereas Luxembourg was considered as a compliant with the so-called foreign dominators. But recent research draws a more differentiated picture, as this article shows.

Since the mid-19th century, the southern region of Luxembourg has acquired names that refer to the industrial mining of iron ore (Minett, Erzbassin, Erzbecken) and the accompanying transformation of the landscape (Rote Erde, Terres Rouges). The article embarks on an etymological and cultural-historical search for traces in order to make the connections between industrialisation, landscape names and regional
and national identity constructions more visible. The study is primarily based on a digitally supported word field analysis (text mining) of Luxembourg newspapers; the temporal focus is on the years between 1850 and 1940. The myth of the “Land of the Red Earth” and, after the First World War, also “Terres Rouges” spread in the first decades of the 20th century through the influence of poetry (Nikolaus Welter, Paul Palgen, Tony Hurst), journalism (Batty Weber) and art (Harry Rabinger). These
discourses were preceded by hitherto barely noticed mentions of the industrially changed landscape as “Rote Erde” in newspapers since 1870 and the naming of ironworks and mines with “Rote Erde” by the German Industrial Group Aachener-Hütten-Aktien-Verein Rothe Erde in 1892/94.

Luxemburg über Sprache sprechen [Discourse figures. How language is being talked about in the political and the public spheres], S. 313-330
This paper analyzes the public discourse on the societal development of
multilingualism in Luxembourg, with a particular focus on the political promotion and symbolic function of Luxembourgish. The starting point is an inventory of the last ‘wave’ in language discourse between 2015, the year of the referendum on the right to vote for foreigners at the national level, and 2019, the year in which the law on the promotion of Luxembourgish was enshrined in law. Using the example of selected “discourse figures”, i.e., central actors and linguistic images and formulations with a structure-forming effect in discourse, the text demonstrates that the discussion of
Luxembourgish and its role within the country’s complex multilingualism has been at a standstill for decades. The analysis of linguistic discourse figures also reveals the proxy role of this discourse: recurring topoi are used to show how the issue of language functions as a cover-up for a discussion about social belonging.
