(The Czech Historical Review under Jaroslav Pánek)
(Die Tschechische Historische Zeitschrift gemeinsam mit Jaroslav Pánek)
This article analyzes the Czech Historical Review in the years 2003–2016 when the author, together with Jaroslav Pánek, has been its editor. Focusing on Pánek's specific contribution to the review, he identifies the major challenges the journal had to face during this period: due to the impact of the internet and a new, government-based evaluation systém of the humanities it witnessed a dramatic change in publishing culture. In consequence, despite maximum efforts by the editors to ensure continuity, the content structure of the review changed visibly: moving away from the traditionally strong Middle Ages, many more articles nowadays are focusing on the modern period. The review thus reflects the strong topical fragmentation and narrowing horizon of modern-day Czech historiography in general. Pánek’s main success as editor, therefore, is to have succeeded in broadening and strengthening the review's international relations and its structural modernization.

RESUME
Dieser Beitrag behandelt die Tschechische Historische Zeitschrift in den Jahren 2003 bis 2016, in denen der Verfasser gemeinsam mit Jaroslav Pánek als Herausgeber wirkte und wirkt. Identifiziert werden dabei vor allem die Schwerpunkte der wichtigen Tätigkeit Páneks für diese traditionell zentrale Zeitschrift der tschechischen Historikergemeinde. In den untersuchten Jahren durchlief die Zeitschrift einen dramatischen Wandel, da sich zum einen unter dem Einfluss des Internets das Publikationsmilieu grundsätzlich veränderte und die Historikergemeinde zum anderen zugleich durch die neuen staatlichen, von den Naturwissenschaften übernommenen, quantifizierenden Konzepte und Methoden der Wertung der wissenschaftlichen Leistung schwer getroffen wurde. Beides hat das das Arbeitsmilieu grundlegend verändert.

Die Herausgeber versuchten mit aller Kraft, in den wichtigen Bereichen der Zeitschrift die Kontinuität zu wahren, dennoch gab es im Vergleich zu den 1990er-Jahren einige Verschiebungen in der Struktur des Inhalts: So verschob sich vor allem der Interessenschwerpunkt der publizierten Studien eindeutig stärker in die Neuzeit bzw. Moderne. Überdies ist sehr deutlich, dass die publizierten Aufsätze den aktuellen allgemeinen Trend innerhalb der tschechischen Historiographie hin zu einer Fragmentierung und einer Verengung des Horizonts widerspiegeln.

Es gehört zu den wichtigsten Verdiensten von Jaroslav Pánek als Herausgeber der Tschechischen Historischen Zeitschrift, dass er es in dieser Umbruchzeit dennoch schaffte, ihre internationale Verankerung auszubauen und die vielfältige strukturelle Modernisierung der Zeitschrift systematisch durchzusetzen.

(Jaroslav Pánek und die Geschichte der frühen Neuzeit zur Jahrtausendwende)
Jaroslav Pánek belongs, without any doubt, amongst the most important Czech historians at the turn of the 21st century in the context of the entire historical community. Yet, his relevance to the development of Early Modern Age research can be seen as fundamentally crucial, impacting on the entire discipline community long-term both methodically and thematically. His monumental publication output relates to conceptual, theoretical-methodological and factographical issues.

Jaroslav Pánek zählt allgemein zu den bedeutendsten tschechischen Historikern der Wende des 20.–21. Jahrhunderts im Kontext der gesamten Historikergemeinde, besonders für die Erforschung der Geschichte der frühen Neuzeit kann aber seine Bedeutung als völlig prinzipiell bezeichnet werden: Er beeinflusste langfristig die gesamte Fachgemeinschaft hinsichtlich Methodologie und Thematik. Sein monumentales wissenschaftliches Werk berührt konzeptionelle, theoretisch-methodologische sowie faktografische Fragen.

Jaroslav Pánek is one of the foremost personalities of the Polish-Czech history studies. Within the framework of his research activities in this field, he draws attention to these principal issues: the relations of a smaller nation towards the history of her larger neighbour; the infrastructure of this research; the composition of research and the specific role of bilateral relations and cross-border regions within the entire scope of one specific national historiography; the importance of this research for the present day.

RESUME
Jaroslav Pánek gehört zu den führenden Persönlichkeiten der tschechischen historischen Polonistik, zu der er im Rahmen seiner Forschungstätigkeit folgende Hauptprobleme thematisierte: das Verhältnis der Geschichtsschreibung einer kleineren Nation zur Geschichte des größeren Nachbars, Infrastruktur dieser Forschungen, Aufbau der Forschung und der spezifischen Stellung der Problematik der bilateralen Beziehungen sowie der Grenzgebiete in der Gesamtspannweite einer konkreten nationalen Geschichtsschreibung, Bedeutung dieser Forschungen für die Gegenwart beider benachbarten Gesellschaften.

Jaroslav Pánek plays a major role in planning the programme of conferences for the Comenius Academic Club and he, thus, contributes to the ever expanding co-operation and friendship between Czech scholars and their colleagues abroad. Jaroslav Pánek has proposed the establishment of the inter-disciplinary journal Comenius – The Journal of Euro-American Civilisation, which has a strict “peer review” policy. In addition to original research articles, it also publishes very valuable reviews of the latest publications in the specialist field.

RESUME
Jaroslav Pánek spielt eine grundsätzliche Rolle bei der Planung des Konferenzprogramms des Comenius Academic Clubs und trägt auch zur sich entfaltenden Zusammenarbeit und Freundschaft tschechischer Wissenschaftler mit Kollegen aus dem Ausland bei. Jaroslav Pánek schlug vor, die interdisziplinäre Zeitschrift Comenius: Journal of Euro-American Civilization zu gründen, die eine strenge Bewertung beim „Peer-review“ anwendet und außer originalen Artikeln auch wertvolle Rezensionen von Neuheiten der Fachliteratur publiziert.

Jaroslav Pánek served on the supreme ruling body of the Czech Aacademy of Sciences (CAS) for a full eight years, in the years 2005–2013 as the Vice-Chairman responsible for the complex co-ordination of concepts for the Third Scientific Division and for addressing scientific and organizational issues at the institutions of the 7th–9th Sections. At a time when he was part of the inner management of the CAS and headed the Third Scientific Division, he promoted the respect for and prestige of the social sciences and humanities not merely within the Academy of Sciences and Czech society but also abroad.

RESUME
Jaroslav Pánek war volle acht Jahre im obersten Leitungsorgan der tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften tätig, und zwar in den Jahren 2005–2013 als der mit der komplexen Koordination der Konzepte des III. Wissenschaftsbereichs und der Lösung wissenschaftlich-organisatorischer Fragen der Einrichtungen der Sektionen 7. bis 9. beauftragte Vize-Präsident. Zu dieser Zeit, als er zur engsten Leitung der Akademie gehörte und an der Spitze des dritten Wissenschaftsbereichs stand, stärkte er Respekt und Prestige der Gesellschafts- und Geisteswissenschaften nicht nur innerhalb der Akademie der Wissenschaften und in der tschechischen Gesellschaft, sondern auch im Ausland.

(Jaroslav Pánek und das Tschechische Institut für Geschichte in Rom)
In 2009, Jaroslav Pánek, as an internationally recognised researcher, became the Head of the Czech Historical Institute in Rome (Istituto Storico Ceco di Roma), a research institution of the Institute of History, Czech Academy of Sciences, a civic research institute, abroad. Research in the archives and libraries of the Vatican, Rome and other Italian cities is bringing forth many valuable results. The personality of Jaroslav Pánek, his ideas and long-term academic and organizational involvement have significantly impacted upon the activities of the Institute.

RESUME
Jaroslav Pánek nahm sich im Jahr 2009 als international respektierter Forscher der Leitung des Tschechischen Instituts für Geschichte in Rom (Istituto Storico Ceco di Roma) an, einer Auslandseinrichtung des Instituts für Geschichte der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Das Studium in den vatikanischen, römischen und italienischen Archiven und Bibliotheken mittels des Tschechischen Instituts für Geschichte in Rom trägt reiche Früchte. Die Persönlichkeit Jaroslav Páneks, seine Gedanken und langjährige wissenschaftlich-organisatorische Tätigkeit schlugen sich sichtbar in der Tätigkeit des Instituts nieder.
