The Return of the ‘Deade Alive’: The Earl of Bristol and Dr Eglisham in the Parliament of 1626 and in Caroline Political Culture Thomas Cogswell English Historical Review 2013 128: 535-570
Previous scholars of parliamentary history and political culture in the early seventeenth century have only paid scant attention to the earl of Bristol’s role in the 1626 Parliament and none at all to that of George Eglisham. Yet they played a dramatic role in the session. They blackened the reputation of the duke of Buckingham and even besmirched the young king. Indeed Eglisham’s accusation did more than merely follow Charles I to the grave; it helped put him there.
